The incidence of autism has increased dramatically in recent years with current prevalence of rate at 1:64 for males and 1:152 for females. Nearly everyone knows someone who has either been diagnosed or is presumed to have a spectrum disorder. Dr. Mary Rockey, the Director of Educational Services and Staff Development for the Resource Center, came to Southwestern on a Superintendent's Day in October to speak about autism. She will be returning in May to share her Autism Awareness Presentation to our Southwestern parents and community members.

The main topics of the presentation will be the following:

  • Understanding the history and basic characteristics of spectrum disorders
  • Spectrum disorders and social difficulties
  • Thinking patterns associated with spectrum disorders
  • Treatment approaches
