Course Descriptions

Introduction to Computers

The focus of this course is to help students become effective consumers and users of computers. Topics to be covered include: computer terminology and basic skills, brief history of computer technology, Internet basics, hardware and software aspects, networks, wired and wireless technology, and privacy, crime and security issues. The curriculum will provide students with real-world experiences in purchasing, using and maintaining a personal computer. Students of all grade and skill levels are invited to take this class.

Graphic Design/Desktop Publishing

This is a project-based course that will emphasize the integration of design and computer-skills to create digital and print media. Students will explore photography and digital imaging, illustration, graphic design and page layout. Students will gain experience with creating publications, setting up for print, and applying design principals to create effective and interesting design projects. Instruction in advanced software techniques and in the use of a variety of peripherals is featured. Students will also work on a variety of publications needed for our own Southwestern Schools such as Trojan Talk, newsletters, district web site and school brochures. Students of all grade and skill levels are invited to take this class, although some basic computer skills are required.

Using Flash 1

Flash is a vector-based design program used for creating multimedia (a combination of text, sound, graphics, and video). It is one of the industry-standard software products for designing web-based multimedia. This course will provide students with a working knowledge of Flash by introducing them to the Flash environment. Students will create an interactive website using Flash, as well as learn how to create cool animation effects.
Students of all grade and skill levels are invited to take this class, although some basic computer skills are required.

Using Flash 2

This course is a continuation of Flash 1 for those students who want to become expert users of Flash. Students will hone their skills in animation, cartooning, and designing multimedia web-based content by participating in project-based activities. Students must take Flash 1 before taking this course.

Project-Based Web Design

This course emphasizes the integration of design principals and software skills to create attractive and effective web sites. Students will apply software and design skills to a variety of authentic web design projects including maintaining our own school web site. The curriculum will focus on advanced design features such as tables, html programming, style sheets, frames, forms, layers, creating buttons and hyperlinks, and importing images and other media. The students will use Microsoft Front Page to design and publish their web sites. Students of all grade and skill levels are invited to take this class, although some basic computer skills are required.

Game Development

Students will use Macromedia Flash and the ActionScript programming language to create a video game in this class.  Students will learn how to design a game, build and add functionality to their objects, add random obstacles in the game, keep score, add levels to their game, and test and publish their game. In addition, we will cover how to add sound and use lots of ActionScript. Students will not only be having fun creating a game, but they will be learning how to apply a programming language. It is recommended that students take Flash 1 before signing up for this class.

Advanced Flash & ActionScript

This course is a continuation of Using Flash 1 and Using Flash 2/Game Development for those students who want to learn more about ActionScripting in Flash. Students will hone their programming skills by completing a number of authentic, real-world projects which include creating an Isometric RPG game, Drawing API, and integrating Flash with PHP and MySQL.
