English Grades 7 & 8ENGLISH 8Quarter 4 This quarter we are reading Holocaust literature. Students were given the opportunity to investigate and choose their own book to read. The benefit of giving the students choice, especially in a unit like this, is that their literature will provide MANY different perspectives to help stimulate class discussion and to help students realize that this time in history had an effect on all kinds of people in all kinds of ways. Throughout the unit, students will participate in various activities that will teach them the key concept of our unit: tolerance. After watching documentaries, participating in simulation activities, and working in tolerance centers, students should begin to see that the attitudes that existed during the Holocaust still exist today, when it comes to societal prejudices. Hopefully, by the end of the unit, students will think differently about how they judge others. As a culminating activity, students will give a book talk to the class, sharing some of the most memorable moments from their chosen books. Check out some of these links for extra-help/enrichment:
ENGLISH 7Quarter 4 Before entering into 8th grade, it is important that these students have some concrete skills in essay writing. During Quarter 3 and the beginning of this quarter, students read the heart-wrenching story of Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers in Brian's Song and the fantastical tale of everlasting life portrayed in Tuck Everlasting. After each story, the students were required to write an analytical essay about a particular aspect of the novel (theme, symbolism, characterization). After analyzing strengths and weaknesses in their writing, students were given the opportunity to re-write one of their essays in the hopes that they would identify their areas of need and remember the "fix-it" strategies for future writing assignments. This quarter also brings the opportunity for students to choose a book that suits their personal tastes and help them to develop the love of reading. Students will become a character from their book and share some of the most interesting aspects of their book with the rest of the class. This should prove to be a lot of fun!!!
